Opportunity 62: Modification of oil export pump

Energy efficiency measure on the oil export pump on Ekofisk 2/4 J. One of the export pumps does not include variable frequency drive and produced a greater pressure increase than required.

The improvement measure aimed at reducing the pressure drop over a valve, and thereby reduce the power demand by 1 MW. Physical changes consisted of reducing the pump impellers. The pump was thereby modified to achieve a pressure drop of 25 bar as opposed to 50 bar.

Results: The measure was implemented in 2009 and the following results were documented in 2010:
About 1 MW in reduced generator loading
Emission reductions of 5 500 tons of CO2/year and 4.5 tons of NOx/year

ConocoPhillips has implemented this measure on Ekofisk 2/4 J

System group: Export and by-product handling (30-39)
Type: Modification Investment: 0,1 - 1 MNOK
Profitability: Profitable Implementation: Implemented
