An energy management system could be integrated and be compatible with other management systems in your company. This includes both the company's management system, but also other management systems such as the ISO standard for environmental management.
The benefit of having one integrated system is to reduce the number of procedures and workload, so that efforts to implement the energy management system is as efficient as possible and that it is easier to maintain.
Common procedures that could be integrated into various management systems are:
- Document Control
- Communication Plan
- Internal Auditing
- Management's review
- Action plans
- Operational procedures and checklists
- Deviation management, corrective and preventive actions
Experience from other industries shows that energy is sometimes a separate part of HSEQ. This increases the focus in the company to operate more energy efficient and provides support to integrate energy into the existing management system, in addition to implementing an energy culture. It then consists of five sections:
Integrated procedures and checklists for energy is another important part of a well-functioning management system. Procedures for increased energy efficiency could for example be connected to the process/equipment specific KPIs.
An illustration of how energy management can be integrated with other management systems such as environmental management and quality management are shown in the figure below.
