Opportunity 43: Optimisation of the Anti-Icing system on the turbines on Sleipner A

The anti-ice system on the Sleipner A turbines was optimised and it led to savings of about 10 000 ton CO2 per year.

As of today hot compressed air from GG compressors is used for anti-ice at the turbine inlet when the external temperature is under 4-5 degrees Celsius. This leads to losing ca. 1 MW shaft power on the turbine. On SLT it was instead chosen to use a heating medium. This means that losses can be limited to a maximum 0.5 MW. The available power from turbines is a limitation for maintaining the full production capacity in periods with high export pressure.

Achieved effect of this improvement opportunity:

  • ca. 4.5 MSm3 gas/year
  • reduced operational costs of about 10 MNOK/year

Statoil has implemented the improvement opportunity on Sleipner A.

System group: Electrical (80-89)
Type: Operations optimisation Investment: 10 - 50 MNOK
Profitability: Profitable Implementation: Implemented
