Opportunity 36: Electrification of a Jack-up drilling rig

Aker BP has contracted Maersk Drilling for a XLE4 rig. The rig has the possibility for electric power supplied from Valhall, in addition to regular diesel generators when electric power is not available. The rig is contracted for five years, with an option for five times one-year in addition, for P&A activities at the Valhall field.

Drivers for this solution are available power from Valhall, high emissions and costs related to diesel consumption, lower noise levels and better working conditions (previously the drilling rigs have been closed down during windless conditions due to excessive concentration of air pollution over the rig).

Estimated annual results:

  • 14.1 MNOK in reduced operating costs (CO2 fee, carbon credits, NOx fee and electricity price included, savings of diesel is not included)
  • 15 200 tonn CO2 og 168 tonn NOX reduced emissions

Aker BP has assessed and implemented the measure for Valhall. The NOx fund has supported the project with 42 MNOK.

System group: Main process (20-29)
Type: Modification Investment: >50 MNOK
Profitability: Profitable Implementation: Implemented
