Opportunity 34: Removal of HVAC water cooler

Replace water cooling compressor with heat exchanger for direct cooling from seawater. Existing water cooler lowers the temperature of the cooling medium from 10 to 6 degrees Celsius. By using seawater and a heat exchanger, the seawater temperature can be used directly, which almost eliminates cooling costs (only a small water pump is needed). Expected result is lower energy consumption when power for the compressors is no longer needed. As a result there will be less fuel gas consumption, emissions and taxes.

Process to get there: Held workshop for energy efficiency, where HVAC was looked at as topic. Is currently at the study state. Can run a pilot on one of the coolers (there are a total of 6 coolers). Moreover, the coolant 407 will be prohibited by EU legislation by 2022.

Estimated yearly results:

  • 2 894 MWh savings
  • 1 600 tonnes CO2
  • Approx. 2 MNOK in savings

Aker BP has assessed the measure for Skarv.
