Opportunity 1: Conversion of a diesel boiler

Conversion of a boiler from diesel to gas was evaluated for Alvheim. The main reason is that gas has a lower carbon intensity than diesel. This will lead to reduction in CO2 emissions, and also in NOx emissions (additional benefit). The boiler is placed in the vicinity of the living quarters. Therefore there could be safety consequences linked to the conversion to gas. HAZOP workshops could help identify potential critical safety show-stoppers. Therefore the feasibility of this improvement opportunity will depend on the findings from the HAZOP workshops.

Expected results:

  • Reduced operational costs and NOx fee.
  • The fuel gas on Alvheim is less energy intensive than diesel, and therefore the fuel gas volume will be 5% higher than the equivalent diesel use.
  • CO2 and NOx emissions will be reduced by ca. 20 %
    • 2016, 3 quarters: 1100 ton CO2 - 1.1 ton NOx
    • 2017, whole year: 1400 ton CO2 - 1.4 ton NOx
  • Spared quotas and payments to the NOx-fond add-up to ca. 130 000 NOK/year
  • In addition there is the difference between loss of export gas (to fuel gas) and saved diesel import.

Aker BP has evaluated this improvement opportunity for the Alvheim FPSO.
